Thumbs up

I was referred by ENT to have balance therapy. Consultants secretary is chasing this up as I have not heard anything.

Anyway I was just wondering what I should expect from this treatment?

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!

Hi smc

I would think balance therapy would be vrt. the therapist will have your diagnosis from the ent and will teach you various exercises to help your brain to compensate. the therapist will try out different little tests with you and then work out a programme for you from there. you will need to do the exercises religiously for them to work. they will make you dizzy as thats what they need to do to force the brain to compensate but it will help you reach recovery so is very worth it. good luck, let us know how you get on.

Just another question about Balance Therapy.

I right in thinking it is quite a long term treatment? Although not actually being seen weekly or anything like that, is it something you will be doing a lot through out the day on a long term basis?

Just wondering as I am waiting to get an appointment but also I am having to fill in an IB50 at the moment and wondering if I could be classed as "awaiting treatment" if I state I am waiting for appointment and if it is a long term treatment can I state this on the form?

Hiya,

Yes VRT is most definaely a long-term treatment. The exercises have to be done 2 or 3 times a day often for quite a few months - hope that helps and good luck with the appointment

Thanks Sid, I have been doing some looking about online and it says it can be 3 months before it starts to work but can take a year.

Should I refer to it as VRT? ENT guy just called it balance therapy.

Ello again,

VRT or balance therapy - both one in the same thing really. It can take up to 3 months for it to work yes, and be prepared for it to make u feel worse before you feel better! Perserverance and dedication is the key mate. After a while it will just become part of your everday routine and you wont even think about it. There are some extra tips in the link below:

<a href="http://www.dizzytimes.com/index.php?showtopic=1329" target="_blank">http://www.dizzytimes.com/index.php?showtopic=1329</a>

Hope that helps!

Thank you for that Sid!!!!

I needed confirmation that it is a long term treatment, need to be armed with the facts!!!

I have read that VRT can make you worse first. Perhaps I should write that on the IB50 to?

I have still not had an appointment through even though I did contact the consultants seceretary who was chasing it up.

I should have got back onto them but with all the to-ing and fro-ing with mum's operation date it just wasn't practical for me to be chasing it.

I see ENT for my follow up appointment next week so I will be telling them I have heard nothing and hopefully they will chase it up. I just feel so much in limbo, I have stayed off the Stemitil, only taken the very occasional one, but it has not made much difference, things have not really improved since I first saw ENT in June. So it would be good to get onto the VRT now and see if it helps.

Finally got an appointment.

Consultant ended up redoing my referral when I saw him in December. He said to give it 6 weeks and if I hadn't heard anything he wanted to know.

Anyway an appointment came through this week for a couple weeks time.

Bit nervous now, anxious how I'll cope etc.....

Also hoping they really will be focusing on the Labs symptoms/balance and not try to say it is my neck. I have had neck problems for longer than the Labs and it is kept under control. The Labs is real, it was brought on by a virus not my neck.
